Comparison
RAAD vs Maccy
Maccy is a free, open-source, keyboard-first clipboard manager. It's genuinely strong on fully open source (mit), deliberately minimal and fast, everything local — no account, no cloud sync, no telemetry, actively maintained with a real changelog.
RAAD takes a different approach: everything runs on-device, with semantic search finds a clip by what it means, not just an exact-text match — maccy is keyword-only, an mcp server exposes your history to claude, cursor, and other ai tools, entirely on-device, snippets with variable placeholders and inline abbreviation expansion, which maccy doesn’t have, 38 built-in paste transforms, versus none in maccy. The table below is checked against both apps directly — see sources at the bottom.

Why people switch to RAAD
- Semantic search finds a clip by what it means, not just an exact-text match — Maccy is keyword-only
- An MCP server exposes your history to Claude, Cursor, and other AI tools, entirely on-device
- Snippets with variable placeholders and inline abbreviation expansion, which Maccy doesn’t have
- 38 built-in paste transforms, versus none in Maccy
Not yet available — on the roadmap
The table above only lists what you can use today. These are built and tested but not shipped in the current release, so they’re never counted as a “yes” above.
- On-device AI actions
- Model-backed actions (summarize, rewrite, extract) exist in code but are gated off in the shipping build. Instant text transforms (case, encoding, etc.) already ship and are listed separately.
- End-to-end encrypted cloud sync
- Sync engine and schema exist and are tested, but not wired into the shipping app — no Settings tab, no way to turn it on yet.
- Team / shared memory
- The encryption layer for shared team boards exists in code but has no shipping UI yet.
- iOS / multi-device app
- RAAD is Mac-only today. Universal Clipboard lets you paste into iOS manually, but there is no RAAD iOS app.
Common questions
Maccy is free — why would I pay for RAAD?
Maccy is a genuinely good free tool if you want a fast, minimal history list. RAAD costs money because it does more: semantic search, on-device AI you can ask questions of, OCR with bounding boxes, sealed pinboards, snippets with variables, and an MCP server AI clients can use. If you just need a searchable buffer, Maccy alone may be enough.
Does Maccy have a history size limit?
Yes — Maccy caps history at a number of items you configure yourself (1 to 999), it isn’t unlimited. RAAD stores your full history.
Can I keep using Maccy alongside RAAD?
Yes, though most people find running two clipboard managers at once confusing since both will try to capture every copy. If you’re trying RAAD out, it’s worth fully quitting Maccy first.
Is Maccy’s source code more trustworthy since it’s open source?
Open source means you (or anyone) can audit exactly what Maccy does with your clipboard, which is a real advantage. RAAD isn’t open source, but takes a different approach to that same trust problem: redacting secrets before they touch disk, working fully offline, and never requiring an account.
